The Mvula Trust staff in our KwaZulu Natal – South office held a ceremony on the 07 March 2016 to hand over miscellaneous items to Avoca Primary School.

Trevor Rajnarain, our Engineering Operations Manager, spearheaded an initiative to rescue a desperate situation at Avoca Primary School – which is located in Durban.

It was in June 2015 when Trevor and other staff members noticed challenges the school and learners were going through on daily basis. Moved by compassion, Trevor and the team embarked on a campaign to collect school shoes and other merchandise to address a plight at this resource – stricken school.

“The school does not recover much money from school fees, and as a result they find it difficult to provide basic requirements to the kids. It is an ideal school to assist,” says Trevor.

Most learners attending at the school are from destitute households; desperately struggling to make ends meet. As a result kids are taught without basic learning tools or proper school uniforms, which could affect their performance.

The effort was intensified earlier this year to bring more partners on board. Inspired by the initiative, businesses and establishments such as Mini Owners Club in KwaZulu Natal, Rap Footwear, KM Connect and Computer Supply Store responded positively. They donated items, for instance: ceiling fans, school shoes, stationery, computers as well as sanitary and cleaning material.

The principal at the Avoca Primary School could not withhold his emotive words of appreciation to The Mvula Trust and businesses that contributed towards the success of the initiative.

“Such a noble gesture does not happen so often and it was really rewarding to see the smiles on our learners’ faces when they were being given these essentials. It is heartening to note that there are people like yourselves who unstintingly contribute to the upliftment of our school and the disadvantaged community we serve,” said Mr Kowlesar (Principal) in a letter.
